Prescribed Burning
Prescribed burning is the controlled application of fire to a specific land area to accomplish planned resource management objectives. Burns are managed in a way as to minimize the emission of smoke and maximize the benefits to the site.
Learn More about Prescribed Burning
Prior to European settlement, fire caused by lightning or set deliberately by native peoples was important in maintaining tallgrass prairie throughout Southwestern Ontario. Without periodic burning, trees and shrubs invade prairie areas causing a rapid transition to forest species. Fire, therefore, is a key component in maintaining tallgrass prairie vegetation. In order to mimic this formerly natural process, controlled fires called ‘prescribed burns’ are set in a safe and systematic manner.
